Peter H. Merlin, 88, of Fort Collins, CO died on April 3, 2017. Peter and his first wife, Elizabeth Allen Swift have four children: Peter (Jennifer) Merlin, Diane (Jay) Homan, Barbara Neal and Philip (Susan) Merlin. Peter was also father to Terry Parker and Diana Allgaier; grandfather of 12, great-grandfather of 2; brother of Hanno Merlin and Christa Haenni; son of the late Helmuth Merlin and the late Reinfriede Mayr.
After completing 2 law degrees from University of Geneva and the University of Michigan, Peter embarked on an international law career at Gardner Carton and Douglas in Chicago, Il. Peter served as Chairman of the firm’s Management Committee from 1980 to 1989. After that, Peter formed and chaired the firm’s international department until his retirement from the partnership in 2000. In 1963, Peter became a founding director of the German-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago and served as its President and then as its Chairman over three decades. Peter was also devoted to many civic and charitable activities, including serving for many years on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Horticultural Society and its Botanic Garden (serving as Chairman from 1972-1979), on the Board of Directors of Benton House, on the Board of Lake Forest Country Day School, on the Board of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, on the Board of Directors of the Coleman Lake Club where he served as President, and as an active member of the Chicago Council of Foreign Relations.
Peter was born in Grabs, Switzerland and grew up in Liechtenstein where he became a great outdoorsman, a passion he continued throughout his life. He enjoyed the sports of hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking, tennis and golf.
